Joel Finds Routine, Purpose, and Community Through Employment

    • Joel, from Cessnock, struggled with chronic depression, severe anxiety, and social isolation, believing he was “unemployable.”

    • Reconnecting with Castle, he completed a Certificate II in Workplace Skills and received tailored guidance to apply for a School Crossing Supervisor role.

    • Joel has been employed for 12 months, gained confidence, built routine and community connections, and exited Castle’s employment support program as a fully independent worker.

For much of his life, 30-year-old Joel from Cessnock didn’t believe work was possible for him. Losing his father at a young age set him on a difficult path, and living with chronic depression, severe anxiety and diabetes made everyday life a challenge.

“At the age of 12, I was diagnosed with chronic depression and severe anxiety. Growing up was a struggle. I ended up being homeschooled through high school, which didn’t help with my social skills later in life. Each time I went to an interview, there was always something pulling me back, telling myself, ‘Don’t bother, you’re just going to get told no again.’”

Joel tried his hand at work in retail, but after losing his job as a teenager, the rejections and knockbacks compounded his anxiety. For years, he lived with the belief that he was “unemployable.”

That changed when Joel reconnected with Castle. He remembered the support he had received years earlier when Castle helped him apply for the Disability Support Pension.

“They even stood with me in the line at Centrelink when I was too nervous to go on my own.

This time, Joel was matched with Mel in Castle’s Cessnock office. She supported him into a Certificate II in Workplace Skills, a nationally recognised qualification that built his confidence, gave him practical abilities to list on his resume, and helped prepare him for the workforce.

“Joel’s journey has been remarkable. From the moment he re-engaged with us, he demonstrated determination, resilience, and a willingness to face challenges head-on. Watching him grow in confidence and become a valued member of his community has been truly inspiring.”

During the course, an opportunity came up as School Crossing Supervisor. Mel encouraged Joel to apply, recognising it as a role that would suit his skills and allow him to manage his anxiety.

“I didn’t even know if I could do the interview. It was online, and I was so anxious. Castle made it easier by setting me up with a private room at their office so I didn’t have to do it alone. That support made all the difference.”

Joel got the job — and with it came not only financial stability, but also new connections and a sense of community.

“I never expected the community aspect. Bus drivers wave to me on the way to work. Parents at the school ask how I’m going. To be noticed and appreciated for what I do — that’s something I never thought I’d have.”

The job has brought new structure into Joel’s life.

“Routine was a big benefit. Waking up every day knowing I had somewhere to be stopped me from sinking into a hole. Having responsibility, having super being put aside — it’s all new to me, and it makes me feel like I’m finally building something for the future.”

Joel has now been employed for 12 months and has exited Castle’s employment support program as a fully independent worker — a milestone he describes with pride.

Looking back, Joel has clear advice for others who may be facing similar challenges:

“The first step is the hardest — just making that call or reaching out. Do it when you’re ready, not because you feel pressured by someone else. And find support. For me, Castle was that support. They were there for me every step of the way.”

Joel’s story is a reminder of how much can change with the right support, encouragement, and opportunity. From believing work was out of reach to becoming a familiar, trusted face at a local school crossing, Joel has not only found employment, but also belonging.
