Guest Blog: Celebrating People With Disability At The Top of Their Game

 

As we dive into this year's events, I’m personally looking forward to watching the Australian Steelers wheelchair rugby team who are looking to recapture the form that saw them achieve back-to-back gold in London and Rio, as well as the Paralympians from the Newcastle region. From track and field to swimming and triathlon, these athletes are at the top of their game, demonstrating what dedication and hard work can achieve.

 

The Paralympics are a powerful platform that showcases the incredible talent and dedication of athletes with disabilities. Beyond the thrilling competitions, the Games also offer valuable insights into how we view athleticism, inclusion, and the potential of all individuals.

 

Here are three key things we can learn over the next 10 days.

 

The Paralympics are a celebration of true athleticism. The dedication and sacrifice of these athletes are evident in every performance. It’s essential to recognise and honour their achievements not just as a testament to their personal journeys but also as a reflection of their hard work, sacrifice and exceptional talent. The Paralympics showcase and honour the best-of-the-best in disability-adapted sports, with any added awareness about people with disabilities being a welcome but secondary benefit.

 

 

 

The Paralympics movement is crucial for promoting disability inclusion and visibility. By highlighting the diverse capabilities of people with disabilities, the Games help build a more inclusive society. This visibility is vital for showing that people with disabilities are not just participants, but are valued for their skills and contributions in all areas of life, including employment, the arts, and community leadership.

 

It’s important to be mindful of the media’s portrayal of Paralympians. Too often, the narrative focuses on overcoming adversity (or having a disability) rather than celebrating athletic excellence. The International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) recent campaign emphasizes this shift, encouraging us to view athletes as competitors rather than mere participants. We are reminded of the importance of language in playing a role in how people with disability are perceived. Key messages shared by the IPC;

• Disability is not something to 'overcome'
• Paralympians don’t get a medal just for showing up
• Their story doesn’t stop at the start line 

Let’s celebrate these athletes for their achievements and dedication, and continue to support the movement towards a more inclusive and understanding society. The Paralympics are a testament to what people with disabilities can accomplish when allowed to shine.
