Brook’s story of strength, stability and purpose through work

After more than a decade living with breast cancer and the physical and emotional toll that came with it, Brook was ready to take a step forward. With her health improving and personal responsibilities as a carer for both her son and mother gradually easing, she began exploring a return to work - but she knew she didn’t want to do it alone.

Brook connected with Castle in April 2023. At the time, she was looking for part-time work close to home in Mayfield or Waratah - ideally something consistent and straightforward, like retail. “A set and forget job,” she called it, the kind of role that would bring routine and purpose without becoming overwhelming.

But even with the motivation, finding the right job after a long period away from the workforce can be daunting. Brook had previously applied for roles with Aldi and completed online interviews with Woolworths. Then in September 2024, just as she received encouraging news about her cancer recovery, things started to fall into place—Brook secured a role at Farrar & Sons Bakehouse in Mayfield.

Since starting, she’s worked closely with her Castle Employment Support Officer, Amy, meeting fortnightly to ensure her job remains sustainable and aligned with her wellbeing. Now approaching six months in the role, Brook reflects on how far she’s come.

“Living with breast cancer for the past 11 years has been a journey full of challenges - physically, emotionally and mentally. After everything I’ve been through, trying to re-enter the workforce felt overwhelming. I knew I needed support, and that’s when I found Castle.”

“From the beginning, Castle was there for me—not just with practical help like resumes and cover letters, but with the kind of support that really matters. They helped me rebuild my confidence and strengthen my communication skills. Through their guidance, I learned the importance of active listening, reliability and believing in myself again.”

“Since starting work, I’ve noticed so many positive changes. My physical health and fitness have improved, and I’ve grown so much as a person. I’ve developed stronger people skills and learned how to deal with all kinds of personalities in the workplace. Most of all, I’ve found a new sense of purpose—and that’s something I didn’t think was possible for a long time.”

Brook’s advice to others who might be walking a similar path is both simple and powerful:

“Don’t be scared. There’s no such thing as failure—sometimes you just need to find another way. Always reach out for support. Castle has been so helpful, supportive, and compassionate. Don’t be afraid to be honest. They’re here to work with us, not against us.”

We’re so proud of Brook and all she’s achieved - and grateful to walk alongside her on this journey.
