How giving back opened the door to Castle
Staff spotlight on Schon Stewart, Employment Case Officer with the Castle Central Coast team.
After years running her own café, Schon sold the business in 2011 and was on the search for a new meaningful chapter. She signed up with Hunter Volunteer Centre and soon began volunteering one day a week with Southlakes Carers Inc in Morisset, helping older people stay independent and connected to their community.
Schon started out one day a week in administration, supporting Southlakes’ manager Vivienne Bruce, and coordinating the volunteer driver program for people needing support with shopping or medical appointments. She also helped in the day programs, participating in the daily activities and events.
“One of the most memorable moments was getting to take part in a re-enactment of the royal wedding, with floral arbour, dress-ups and lots of fun – the staff were so great at creating an engaging environment for participants,” says Schon.
As her passion for the work grew, so did her role and she was soon volunteering her time three days a week. One day, a Castle Toronto staff member visited the centre and spoke with Vivienne about a vacancy with Castle’s Disability Employment Services team. They had a role going for someone who wanted to help people with disability find sustainable, supportive employment. Vivienne immediately recommended Schon for the role and the rest is history!
This week marks 14 years since Schon joined Castle, where she continues to help participants with the same care and heart she brought to those early days of volunteering. She always encourages others to try volunteering, especially to her participants considering a career in community services.
“It’s one of the best ways to learn, grow and understand the industry, finding out where your heart fits.”
Congratulations on your journey, Schon!
